Bathroom Toilet

The History of Toilet Development in China in the 21st Century (2000-2026)

Since the beginning of the 21st century, China's toilet industry has completed a three-stage leap from "scale expansion" to "intelligent upgrading" and then to "global leadership," becoming a typical microcosm of China's manufacturing transformation and consumption upgrading. This process was based on the standardization and water-saving features of ceramic toilets, with the localization and popularization of smart toilets as its core. Relying on the four major industrial clusters in Foshan, Chaozhou, Taizhou, and Tangshan, and driven by policy, technological breakthroughs, and market demand, it achieved a leap from catching up to keeping pace, and even leading in some areas. Products have also evolved from basic sanitary ware to high-tech products integrating health monitoring and smart home features.

The period from 2000 to 2010 was the "foundation-building period for scale and standardization" of the industry. With accelerated urbanization and deepening housing system reforms, domestic demand for toilets experienced explosive growth. Production surged from approximately 500,000 units in 2000 to nearly 5 million units in 2010, representing an average annual compound growth rate of 25%, with the market size exceeding 10 billion yuan. During this period, domestic companies upgraded from manual grouting to mechanized production lines, and processes such as dry granulation and high-pressure grouting became widespread, solving the pain points of high water absorption and easy staining of traditional ceramic toilets. Simultaneously, the national "Building Water-Saving Design Standard" was issued, promoting the iteration of water-saving toilet technologies. Direct flush toilets were gradually replaced by siphon and vortex flush toilets, and 3/6-liter dual-flush toilets became the industry standard. In 2005, the development of domestic smart products began, gradually forming the prototype of the smart toilet industry. However, at this time, core electronic control components still relied on imports, and the annual shipment of smart toilets was only about 100,000 units, with a penetration rate of less than 2%.

The period from 2011 to 2015 was the "awakening of smart technology and the initiation period of domestic substitution." The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine launched a quality improvement plan for smart toilets, and industry associations introduced group standards that were stricter than national standards, significantly improving product stability. Domestic companies made breakthroughs in core technologies such as instant heating, self-cleaning nozzles, and microcomputer control boards, achieving localization of key components and reducing product prices from tens of thousands of yuan to several thousand yuan. By 2015, the number of domestic smart toilet manufacturers had increased to over 200, with Zhejiang Province, as the birthplace, becoming a core production and sales base for smart toilets nationwide.

The period from 2016 to 2026 is the "period of comprehensive intelligentization and global expansion." Smart toilets entered a phase of rapid popularization, with sales increasing from 4.684 million units in 2018 to 8.733 million units in 2024, representing an average annual compound growth rate of approximately 10.94%. In 2024, the Chinese toilet market reached 65 billion yuan, with smart toilets accounting for 35%, generating over 23 billion yuan in sales. Technologically, domestic companies continue to innovate. The "flip-flush technology" revolutionizes traditional flushing principles, achieving breakthroughs in low noise, water conservation, and pollution prevention. The application of new materials such as microcrystalline glaze and antibacterial glaze gives toilets long-lasting self-cleaning capabilities. Functionally, smart toilets have evolved from basic features like heated seats and warm water washing to smart home terminals integrating health monitoring (heart rate, blood pressure, urinalysis), voice control, and HarmonyOS connectivity, adapting to the needs of both the elderly and the younger generation.

In terms of market structure, a "domestic-dominated, foreign-supplemented" pattern has emerged. Domestic brands hold over 60% of the domestic market share, and their products are exported to more than 100 countries and regions worldwide. In 2024, China's sanitary ceramics exports reached 110 million pieces. Simultaneously, the "toilet revolution" and the renovation of old residential areas have driven the deployment of toilets in rural areas and the upgrading of existing ones, leading to a rapid increase in the penetration rate of smart toilets in rural areas. By early 2026, China had become the world's largest producer, consumer, and exporter of toilets, possessing numerous core patents in areas such as intelligent flushing, water-saving technology, and health monitoring. It has completed its transformation from a "manufacturing powerhouse" to a "smart manufacturing powerhouse," contributing Chinese solutions to the global sanitary ware industry.
